Landry Arena Renovation
FITCHBURG, MA
Our renovation and adaptive reuse of the 1972 Landry Arena transformed the decommissioned ice arena into a dedicated athletic, training and conditioning facility for varsity athletes. The project was in response to Fitchburg State University's growing athletic and campus life needs and seeks to enhance the student athlete experience.
Landry Arena now includes facilities for training, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and a fieldhouse with batting cages that enables student athletes to continue practicing when the conditions outdoors are not ideal. The complex also includes an office for the City of Fitchburg’s Parks & Recreation Department, providing the facility with a public/private operational model.
Our renovation opened in 2018 and is the first phase of a more comprehensive renovation to the building. MDS worked closely with Fitchburg State University and Massachusetts State College Building Authority (MSCBA) project leaders and stakeholders, and construction managers to prioritize the scope to meet the project’s tight budget and schedule objectives. MDS performed a comprehensive building assessment, identifying deferred maintenance improvements that will be addressed in later phases.
