Nock-Molin School Renovation
NEWBURYPORT, MA
Nock-Molin School combines Molin Upper Elementary and Nock Middle Schools and serves 900 students in grades 4–8. Renovating the 1970s school was identified as a priority for the City to address a range of accessibility improvements, building envelope and structural issues and building systems upgrades.

Working within a very tight budget, MDS helped the City of Newburyport prioritize project goals and make informed decisions about the renovation scope. Exploratory work helped address structural and building envelope failures that were due to flaws in the original 1970s construction that had plagued the building for years.
The project reorganized arts and special education programs, integrated comprehensive accessibility improvements, and addressed structural defects and water infiltration. Upgrades to the mechanical system reduce energy consumption by approximately 20%. Accessibility improvements include modifying the slope of the auditorium floor to accommodate accessible seating, adding accessible unisex bathrooms, and making the entire site fully accessible. Finish upgrades enliven the classrooms and corridors and contribute to the school’s sense of place. The project opened in 2014 and is LEED-Gold certified.
